Recent MFR Cycling Exploits
Report thanks to Rich Sille
Sunday saw the return of the Trailquest series, this time in the Laxey area. These events are designed to test navigational & biking skills, competitors having to visit a series of controls worth varying amounts of points in the 3hr time limit. After the recent good weather & thoughts of getting BBQs out, it was back to the Manx winter with biting cold & thick clag.
New MFR member Rob Sorby claims to have won the event, but curiously his name doesn’t appear in the results! Steve Partington hoped to do well on home turf & duly finished 4th, just ahead of Lloyd & Jackie in 5th. Further down the field there were good showings from Peter Bradley (11th), Dave Gelling (18th), Rich Sille & Cal Partington (26th) & Paul Cawley (31st). Despite the rain, the tracks were generally in good condition, except for the clay treacle in Conrhenny plantation.
Even after 3 days, I’m struggling to get Tom’s bike clean!
A few of the MFR guys and gals took part in Tuesday night’s duathlon at the windswept, seaside resort of Ramsey.
The race was won by Darren Bell with part-time fell runner Ant Bell-Scott some 3mins back. Lloyd was close behind in 3rd, not bad considering his weapon of choice for the bike leg was a 1987 Raleigh Grifter!!!
There were other determined performances from Godfrey & Paul Cawley. Jackie had a good day out too, finishing a comfortable 2nd in the women’s race. Spare a thought for Richard George, whose car broke down on the way to the race… when the needle hits the stop and the red warning light flashes, that’s when you need to put more petrol in!!!
