HistoryOn the way down

The route from the bottom of Injebreck plantation to Carraghan summit and back was devised by Peter Simpson and Phil Brooks. Victory in the first race in 1982 went to Keith Callister who beat Tony Varley by 45 seconds in probably the best field of local runners ever assembled for a fell race - Steve Brennan, Paul Clarke, Steve Kelley, Dave Newton, Steve Partington and Chris Quine. Anne Gomer was the first lady to finish.

Tony Varley won in 1983. Keith Callister dominated the race with a further four victories by 1989, breaking the course record on each occasion lowering the record to 16min 54s.

Anne Gomer won the ladies race for a second time in 1984 and Steph Quirk won the next two years breaking the course record on both occasions lowering it to 23min 48s.

Allan Gage and Stephen Hull won in 1988 and 1990.

Keith Callister had another two victories in 1989 and 1991 taking his total to 7 victories. Steph Quirk dominated the ladies race taking another three wins between 1990 and 1990 for improving the ladies record to 22min 56s.

Tony Rowley won in 1992 and scored the first of his four consecutive wins in 1994.

The course was lengthened in 1996 by moving the start and finish to the main Injebreck road. Steph Maddrell (ne Quirk) won the ladies race for the sixth time.

The course records for this route were Tony Rowley 24min 03s. and Brenda Walker 26min 27s. both in 1997. Dave Young won in 1998, the first time the race had been won by a veteran and Brenda Walker won the ladies race for a second time.

In 1999 a new course was used, the Mountain Marathon route from Injebreck farm yard to Carraghan summit and back to the farm yard. Paul Renshaw won in 22min 04s and Rose Hooton won the ladies race in 26min 41sec.

Tony Okell won in 2000 improving the course record to 21min 18s. and Brenda Walker improved the ladies course record to 24min 30s. Richard Jamieson won in 2002 improving the course record to 19min 15s and Rose Hooton won the ladies race.

A new course going through the plantation to Carraghan summit starting and finishing at Injebreck reservoir was started in 2003. Richard Jamieson won in 20min 28s. and Rose Hooton won the ladies race for the third time in 27m 07s.
