HistoryUp Snaefell

The route that started and finished at the Creg ny Baa Hotel and ascended the peaks of Cronk Gerjoil y Chiarn, Mullagh Ouyr, Snaefell, Beinn y Phott and Cronk Gerjoil y Chiarn was devised by Tony Varley.

The first race in 1980 was won by Steve Kelly.

Tony Varley won the next two years improving the course record to 1hr. 24min. 23sec.

Keith Callister won in 1983 improving the course record to 1-21-41 and Phil Cain won in 1984.

In 1985 the start to finish were moved to Windy Corner and Carraghyn Peak and the descent into Baldwin Valley were included. Keith Callister won in 1-19-09 and Anne Gomer became the first lady to complete the race in 2-25-00.

Tony Varley won in the year of the big snow, 1986, when a heavy fall of snow one week before the race resulted in a lot of the course being covered by up to three feet of snow. Tony had the hardest task he led all the way and everyone else followed in his footsteps!

Tony Varley took his tally to four wins in 1987 and he improved the course record to 1-15-02. Anne Gomer won the ladies race for a second time improving the ladies record to 2-01-12.

Alan Gage improve the course record to 1-14-54 in 1988.

Keith Callister broke the course record in 1989 setting new figures of 1-13-48 which still stand. Steph Quirk scored the first of her hat-trick of wins improving the ladies course record to1-34-25.

In 1991 Keith Callister missed the start by two minutes, caught the leader Stephen Hull with three miles to go and worn by six seconds!

Tony Rowley dominated the 1990s winning six years in a row from 1992, although in 1997 he crossed the finish line with Ian Ronan, the only time there has been a dead heat. In 1997 the start and finish were moved to the Bungalow where there was more room for parking. Steph Quirk dominated the ladies race taking her tally to five wins with victories in 1993 and 1994.

Tony and Steph have won the race more times than anyone else.

Brenda Walker won the ladies race three times in succession from 1996 to 1998 breaking the ladies record on two occasions improving it to 1-21-59.

Tony Rowley won for a record seventh time in 1999 and Rose Hooton won the ladies race.

Brenda Walker won the ladies race for the fourth time in 2000.

Ian Gale won in 2002 and Rose Hooton won the ladies race for a second time

Paul Sheard and Cal Partington won in 2003 and Simon Skillicorn and Marie Noon in 2004.
