History Descending to Druidale

The 20 mile route going from Tholt-y-Will to Glen Auldyn, Slieu Ouyr, Cronk-y-Vaare, Snaefell, Kirk Michael reservoir, Glen Dhoo, Slieu Dhoo and back to Tholt-y-will was devised by Ian Callister.

The first race in 1981 was won by Tony Varley in 4-01-35.

In 1982 there was a race long battle between two visiting athletes which resulted in John Reade beating Ken Taylor by 7 seconds improving the course record to 3-07-49. There was a dead heat for third place between Tony Varley and Chris Quine who improved the local course record to 3-42-39.

Tony Varley won again in 1983 and Ann Gomer became the first lady to complete the course in 5-22-05. Tony Varley dominated the event, a new local record of 3-28-14 in 1984 was followed by two more wins making it four wins in a row.

In 1986 Steph Quirk became the second lady to complete the race recording an excellent time of 4-14-37 on a slightly shorter course which was only used for one year. In 1987 regular visitor Martin Hudson won a photo finish with Steven Hull who improved the local course record to 3-23-54. Tony Varley missed the race due to injury.

Tony Varley continued his domination in 1988 improving the local course record to 3-22-47. In seven races Tony Varley had won six and was first local finisher in the other.

Ian Callister won in 1989 and repeated his win the following year.

Tony Rowley won in 1991 and Dave Young won in 1992 the first time the race had been won by a veteran.

In 1996 Brenda Walker became the third lady to complete the course, improving the ladies record to 4-12-57 and she won the handicap race. Steph Quirk became the first lady to complete the course twice and Rose Hooton became the fourth lady to complete the course.

The 1998 race was canceled due to a small number of entries.

Dave Young won the handicap race in 1999 and was also the fastest runner in the race.

The 2001 race was cancelled due to foot in mouth.

To encourage more entries a shorter 16 mile course was devised by Richie Stevenson over Slieu Dhoo, Slieu Curn, Slieu Freoaghane, Sartfell, Slieu Maggle and Beinn-y-Phott.

Tony Okell won in2002 recording 2-50-34. Ian Gale won in 2003 improving the course record to 2-46-06.

After 1992 the race became a handicap event and was held on alternative years with the Axnfell race.

Tony Rowley won the handicap race in 1994 and was also the fastest runner in the race.
