History On the way up South Barrule

The route over Slieu Whallian, Dalby Mountain, South Barrule and back over Slieu Whallian was devised by Ian Callister.

The first race in 1982 was one of the events in the annual Patrick Village fete. Thick mist almost down to sea level contributed to Ian Callister winning by 37 minutes probably the largest winning margin in a medium distance race.

Tony Varley won in 1983 improving the course record by 1 minute to 1hr 57min..

In 1984 the course was reduced by one mile to 10 miles by omitting the two ascends of Slieu Whallian and Keith Callister won in 1hr 37min 51s. An unusual occurrence in this event was nine different winners in the first nine years!

Phil Cain won in 1985 improving the course record to 1-34-07 and visiting athlete Dave Woodhead won in 1986.

In 1987 the start was moved to Creggan Mooar farm at Dalby and a 10.5 mile route was taken to Eairy Cushlin, Lag Ny Killey, the infamous climb up Cronk Ny Arrey Laa, South Barrule and to the finish on the fete field. Stephen Hull won in 1-31-52 and Tony Rowley won the following year.

Donald Lee, from Cumbria, won in 1989 and again in 1990 when he improved the course record to 1-27-57. Steph Quirk was the first lady to compete in the race recording 1-55-39. Richie Stevenson won in 1991 and Donald Lee won for a third time in 1992 when he improved the course record to 1-26-49

In 1994 Tony Rowley scored the first of four consecutive wins and Steph Maddrell (ne Quirk) scored the second of two consecutive wins improving the ladies record to 1-53-49.

In 1997 the finish was moved to Patrick School as the fete was no longer held and the start was moved to the main road in Dalby to keep the distance the same. Brenda Walker won the ladies race for the second time improving the ladies record to 1-48-11.

Ian Ronan won in 1998 and Brenda Walker won the ladies race for the third time improving the ladies record to 1-40-52. In 1999 Dave Young became the first veteran to win the race and Rose Hooton was first lady.

In 2000 the finish was moved to Glen Maye Village Hall and the descent of South Barrule was re-routed via the Round Table crossroads and Glen Rushen reducing the distance by one mile to 9.5 miles. Tony Okell scored the first of his hat trick of wins and Brenda Walker won for the fourth time. In 2000 Rose Hooton scored the first of her hat trick of ladies wins.
