MMM 2012 Date Change

The organising committee of the Manx Mountain Marathon would like to announce that the date for the 2012 race will be moved from its traditional Easter Saturday date to the 29th September.
There are several reasons for the change.
Over the last few years it has been more and more difficult to attract competitors from off-island to support the race. Amongst the factors that seem to influence this are expensive travel costs and inadequate choice of ferry sailings. The late September date would be outside school holiday times with the resultant lower fares.
Added to this there is the problem of the MMM usually being held before the English and British Championships races have started, making the ultra distance of the Manx unattractive to prospective championship runners. April is a month of numerous `big` races with the likes of the London Marathon and the Three Peaks race tempting alternatives to the MMM.
Another problem that gives the MMM organisers a headache each year, and the earlier Easter falls the more concern it causes, is the prospect of the Snaefell Mountain Road being closed due to a fall of snow or even just icy conditions. This happens far more frequently than used to be the case.
A further problem encountered annually is the date clash with the Easter Athletics Festival. Although it is accepted that a few clubs from off island will utilise both events for their runners it does require a massive commitment from local volunteers to officiate and marshal over the Easter weekend. This situation has been compounded in recent years by added Health and Safety stipulations placed on organisers. To split the two events would hopefully release some of the pressure on the two race committees.
Finally on a purely local theme the MMM has caused problems in the Manx fell league. Many competitors have been tempted to give the race a miss as the huge physical effort of running 31 miles would have a detrimental effect on their remaining league races. The September date would be the final league counter and so avoid this problem.
The organising committee are also looking at making adjustments to the race format to make it more appealing to a larger cross section of off-road runners. The most exciting change being the introduction of a 2 person team relay option. More announcements will be made soon.

Paul Thompson Takes 2011 MMM Win

Paul Thompson notched up another win to his MMM tally yesterday taking a resounding victory. He had the company of eventual second place runner Chris Birchall up until the climb to South Barrule where his experience of the course showed through allowing him to pull out a gap of 17 minutes by the finish. Birchall finished a further 15 minutes clear of third place Bryan Carr who took the vet 40 prize.

Leading vet 50 was Martyn Pollitt of Burden Road runners finishing 8th overall with the top vet 60 prize going to Pete Booth of Clayton le moors just sneaking under the 6 hour barrier.

Top lady was Jean Brown of Clayton le Moors she finished strongly in 21st position in a time of 6 hours 26 minutes.

Of the local runners the prize for top Manx man was Paul Sykes finishing in an excellent time of 5 hours 31 minutes in 6th position.

In the half MMM it was close racing all the way with the top 5 only splitting in the last few miles, eventual winner was Mat Gilbert of Wrecsam Tri, he however finished along with Andrew Davies of Mercia who was awarded the second spot. Third place went to local runner Mark Preston finishing in an excellent time of 1 hour 55 minutes. Top lady in the half was Karen Best of Otley AC finishing in 7th.

Thanks to all the competitors, sponsors, marshal and officials without which the race could not go ahead, there was an excellent atmosphere at the beach finish outside the Bay pub once the sun came out!

MMM Showers

There will be showers available at the finish in Port Erin. They are situated about 2 minutes walk from the Bay Hotel. Please ask the finish marshals if you require one as you will need a token.

MMM 2011 Update

The finish has changed this year. It is now on the lower promenade in Port Erin near the Bay Hotel. Competitors will stay on the pavement as they proceed down the top prom, past last years finish, as far as the Falcons Nest Hotel. From here its sharp right and then follow the flagged and marked route to the finish. The final 100mtrs will be along the shore.

The pre-race meal will be served at the Bay Hotel. Tickets will be given out at the finish. Any extra meals required can be purchased at the Bay at very reasonable rates.

The prize presentation for both the full and half marathons will be held at the Bay at 8.00pm. If the weather is good the presentation will be held outdoors on the stage opposite the hotel. In the event of poor weather it will be inside which may cause a problem due to it being a smaller venue than that used in previous years. The venue has had to be changed for financial reasons. The organisers would ask for everybodys patience and co-operation.

MMM Meal Update

There will be meals available to purchase for guests of runners down at the Bay Hotel where the presentation will be taking place this year. These can just be bought down there after the race.
